What is it for?

To shut off the flow of water in a pipe. You turn the handle an a ball inside closes the valve. It also acts as a union so you can disconnect the adjoining pipe.

Where do you use it?

Between two lengths of pipe to join them but so that you can shut off the flow along them. For example just before your pump so can stop the flow if you need to take the lid off the pump. In a by-pass configuration so you can make the water flow by-pass your heater.
