Non-Chlorine Alternatives for Swimming Pools
If you are not keen on using traditional chlorine in your pool, there are a few solid alternatives—either cutting back on chlorine or eliminating it completely. It’s worth noting that chlorine’s popularity comes from how efficiently it does the three big jobs all on its own: killing bacteria, tackling algae, and breaking down oils and skin particles. Alternatives tend to cost more and demand more upkeep
Bromine—chemically similar to chlorine but gentler. It forms compounds called bromamines, which don’t leave that typical chlorine stench and even act as sanitizers themselves. Great for spas, tolerant of higher pH and temperatures, though a bit more expensive and sometimes requiring occasional “shock” treatments to handle waste build-up.
Persulphates (Active Oxygen)—these tackle bacteria and bather waste and let you swim immediately after treatment. However, they’re not much use against algae, so you’ll need another product for that. Systems like Bayrol's Soft & Easy or Aquablanc O2 include both persulphate and algicide in one, but budget-wise, they're 50% pricier and require double the dosage compared to chlorine.
